Theodore Boborol makes it to Cinemalaya 2019 with photocopy machine lady story

With the release of the first batch of teaser trailers for the 2019 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, Theodore Boborol’s ISKA is quickly emerging as one the most-anticipated indie films of the season.

Led by award-winning actress Ruby Ruiz on her first starring role, ISKA tells the story of a loving but impoverished grandmother of the same name, who works as a photocopy machine lady at the University of the Philippines Diliman. The term Iska also refers to a female “Iskolar ng Bayan” or a national scholar from the University of the Philippines (UP).

The ISKA star has received acclaim for her major roles on Chito Rono’s Signal Rock and the Vilma Santos starrer Ekstra, for which she won a Best Supporting Actress trophy. Ruiz has also walked the prestigious Cannes Film Festival red carpet for Brillante Mendoza’s Ma’ Rosa, and has a role in the Hollywood film The Bourne Legacy.

Boborol, a graduate of the Broadcast Communication program in UP Diliman, says that ISKA resonates closely with him, being filmed at his alma mater. The screenplay is also loosely based on the compelling story of his house cleaner.

ISKA is Boborol’s first independent outing after the box-office success of Just The Way You Are (Liza Soberano, Enrique Gil), Vince & Kath & James (Julia Barretto, Joshua Garcia, Ronnie Alonte), and Finally Found Someone (Sarah Geronimo, John Lloyd Cruz).

Boborol was also the man behind the lens of some of ABS-CBN’s top shows, namely: Forevermore, Be My Lady, Annaliza(Catholic Mass Media Awards Best Drama series, 2016), Angelito: Batang Ama and its sequel Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto; and the recent primetime hit Araw Gabi, for which he won Best Direction at the first Asian Academy Creative Awards.

The teaser trailer launched last March 1 quickly garnered huge viewership on Twitter after celebrities shared their badge of support.

Boborol’s former stars Julia Barretto, JM de Guzman, Barbie Imperial, Marco Gumabao, Martin del Rosario, Sue Ramirez, Daniel Matsunaga, and Heneral Luna star John Arcilla vocalized their praise and support to their director.

ISKA is a co-production of Cinemalaya and Firestarters Films, the studio behind the internationally-acclaimed independent film 1st Ko Si Third (featuring Nova Villa and Freddie Webb), and the Metro Manila Film Festival entry Kabisera (starring Nora Aunor).

Catch ISKA from August 2 to 11 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and in select cinemas nationwide.

HE sure is a looker!

In his younger years, though he’s just turning 27 in April 2019, Chuckie Antonio has been part of the modeling world—Circle of Ten. So, he was able to do some modeling stints. Why didn’t he pursue a career in showbiz?

“Hindi ako magaling umarte. I just wanted to help the community. And sa pagiikot ko na noon pa man sa 37 barangays, I can say na I want to add the knowledge in technology sa traditional na ginagawa na with health, education and employment. To introduce online job fairs. A platform na similar to JobStreet and call it Jobby. Marami rin naman tayo youth na pagdating sa digital magagaling. So my aim is to provide  the opportunity to them.”

But the graduate of a Master of Science in Management  (Specialization in Entrepreneurship and Innovation) from the Singapore Management University preferred to follow in the footsteps of his grandparents who held positions in the government-Congressman, Mayor and more.

“My formative years were honed at the Ateneo de Manila University. And I pursued my Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurial Management at the University of Asia and the Pacific. At 18, I was already part of our Bgy. Ugong Norte. It is my 3rd term as a Barangay Kagawad. When I started, I was the youngest Kagawad of Quezon City.”

As a former SK Kagawad Chuckie performed as Ways and Means Committee Chairman, Transport and Communication Committee Chairman, Bgy. Anti-Drug Abuse Council Vice-Chairman and Youth and Sports Committee Chairman.

At his young age, Chuckie has also delved in businesses like a cafe, LED Trading, Shoe Manufacturing and B2B and Retail.

Is he already planning in settling down?

“Not yet. I want to focus muna on what’s important. And I know I have the passion for it. If it’s meant for me, it will be. If there is one thing I can do for the entertainment industry, your industry, I would like to connect to the people who are part of it, like you. So, I would know in what way, I could help.”

Running independently to be Quezon City’s Councilor, Chuckie has chosen to be on his own.

Running independently to be Quezon City’s Councilor, Chuckie has chosen to be on his own.

“Ayaw ko po kasi na may masagasaan o masaktan o sumama ang loob. Kaya mas mabuti na ang ganito na sumusuporta pa rin naman sila sa akin. But it’s my parents who help me a lot. And our close friends. Marami po ang tumutulong at naniniwala. Like, si Janice de Belen is a very good friend. Nakasama ko na siya na nag-palengke tour for me. Kaya I can say na open naman po ako sa lahat ng gustong tumulong.”

Though getting married and having a family is way far in his mind, Chuckie admits that he has an inspiration.

The single guy, still the bachelor has always been a winner in all his terms as Kagawad. Now wanting to wear a different hat,  or Albert Alvin Lopez Antonio is not just your eye candy candidate.

“Ginugulo ko raw ang buhay ko. Sabi ng ilang close to me. And I am happy na the girl who gives me inspiration is also someone who is driven, may gustong gawin sa buhay niya, mabait at may goal in life.”

In showbiz, he will be smitten by the charms of a Kim Chiu.

They are four in the family, one is studying to become a lawyer, another is studying to be a doctor and an Ate who’s a pre-school teacher.

All goal-oriented.

In an LDR relationship. (His Isabella is finishing her degree in London).

Number 1 in your ballots. Who promises to always make his constituents in Quezon City’s 3rd District number one in his priorities!

Finally, I will feel the presence of a Councilor in our District!
