In his short vacation in the country (he came home last May 3), Miss Saigon’s Thuy, Gerald Santos met with the bosses of Star Music headed by Roxy Liquigan to sign a recording contract.
“May break from the show so nagkaroon ng chance to fly home. At natutuwa naman kami ni Kuya Rommel (Ramilo, his manager) kasi nandito na kami finally sa Star Music with Sir Jonathan Manalo’s help. Na-record ko na my first single in a series of singles na gagawin ko sa kanila.”
Written by Francis “Kiko” Salazar, “I Am Yours” can now be downloaded at the different music platforms like Spotify and iTunes.
If there is one thing that Gerald missed from the UK, it is the weather.
“Pero madali naman ako naka-adapt sa init ng panahon natin. No place like home.”
With more than 200 performances in the different venues for “Miss Saigon,” Gerald still experiences excitement with every performance.
“278 performances. From boos to wild applause. May times na nawi-weirdan pa rin. Nervous pa rin.
“So, parang nag-recharge lang ako ngayon dahil may 2 weeks vacation. ‘Yung naiwan ‘yung 1st cover muna for me ang gaganap na Thuy.
“Every day is a new day and a new way to perform. May maliliit na nuances akong pinapalitan or idinadagdag para lang maging challenging pa rin ang performance at hindi nga parang routine na lang o pareho ang bawat performance.
“Timing din ang lahat. Noon ko pa gusto maging part ng Star Music. Kaya nung iparinig ni Sir Jonathan sa akin ‘yung song nagustuhan ko na agad. Nandun pa rin ang tunog Gerald.
“In the future kung may collaboration, gusto ko with my former loveteam, si Morrissette. I’d love to have a project with her.”
With 8 shows a week, he admits that he constantly grows as an artist and the most important is being the pride of the country.
After his two weeks vacation, he will be back in the tour as Thuy with two covers in the wings (the 2nd is Joaquin Pedro Valdez).
In the the case Gerald gets sick, the first cover takes the role of Thuy. And when the 1st cover gets sick the 2nd cover takes his place and can only perform when Gerald is sick or cannot perform.
Gerald’s dream for now as far as his single is concerned is, “l am hoping to have more songs at sana marami ang mag-download ng “I Am Yours” at mag-hit siya.
“Hindi siya typical na pop. May depth at bigat. Ballad naman ang root ko talaga which is perfect for me. Time constraint lang kaya we’re doing a series of singles muna. Bago ‘yung album.”
He has renewed his contract with “Miss Saigon” so he will still continue to portray the role of Thuy.
“After “Miss Saigon”? Personally, gusto ko rin mag-audition for other musicals like “Les Miserables” or “Phantom of the Opera.”
“Let’s see what the future holds. Hindi pa natin alam ang mangyayari. Ang will ni God ang sinusunod ko.”
Gerald has always been filled with gratitude. Before he flies back to the UK.
On Monday he spent some time with his press friends at a friend’s resort in San Juan, La Union. Showed them rehearsal clips of his role and his music video of “I Am Yours.”
“It’s such a nice feeling to be home. To be with family and friends. Doon may Asian store. Kaya may 5 putahe akong niluluto na pinagpapalit-palit ko para hindi ako magsawa. Nagluluto ako ng adobo, nilaga, gulay.”
Still simple and humble in many ways, Gerald continues to wow the world with his sterling performance.
